In the process of datamining Wrath of the Lich King Classic Patch 3.4.2’s spell information, a few things popped up that were particularly notable. First, an entirely new item that did not exist in original WotLK, called the Holy Hand Grenade, which mentions both Chromie and Murozond in the item description.

Additionally, Blizzard is implementing a “Time Traveling” option, which will allow players to phase into the Level 60 version of Onyxia, once it is updated with the upcoming Level 80 variant. That’s it, everything else in this article is just fun speculation.

Time Travel Option for Onyxia’s Lair

  • NEW  You can enter the classic, level 60 version of Onyxia’s Lair.
    Effect #1 Complete Quest
  • Effect #2 Apply Aura: Dummy
  • Effect #3 Trigger Spell
(Trigger Spell: Update Zone Auras Update Zone Auras)

NEW

While this is a nice option for players interested in killing the Level 60 version of Onyxia, for cosmetic purposes or otherwise, it certainly reminds you that Classic in itself is time traveling into the past. In the very announcement video for Classic WoW, Chromie uses a “Temporal Discombobulator” to reverse time and travel back to before Majordomo Executus has even summoned Ragnaros!

New Item – Holy Hand Grenade

  • NEW Holy Hand Grenade
Oh no! Murozond send Zombie Horrors from the future! I hope this helps! — Chromie

In the item database for WotLK Patch 3.4.2, the only thing that is worth noting is a new item, which did not exist in the original Wrath of the Lich King, Holy Hand Grenade. In the description for the item, Chromie is explaining that Murozond has sent Zombie Horrors from the Future and is offering this item to stop them.

This is quite a peculiar item, because in all of Wrath of the Lich King’s in-game text, Murozond is never named, not once. The only real mention of Murozond comes from the quest Mystery of the Infinite. In trying to discover the leader of the Infinite Dragonflight, the adventurer sees Nozdormu in a vision. Chromie asks “You saw Nozdormu? That doesn’t make any sense.” because Chromie has no idea Murozond exists at this point in time.

There are two references to a “Holy Hand Grenade” in WoW’s history, an obvious reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a great film. First, is Indalamar’s Holy Hand Grenade (not to be confused with Mohawk Grenade), an item that was never introduced in game. The spell attached to this item is Holy Hand Grenade of the Resistance, which has a very low spell ID number, meaning it might have been a part of the game since the very beginning, just hidden in the data until Wrath of the Lich King.

Second is Dud Holy Hand Grenade, a junk item from Mists of Pandaria. The item text reads, “Unfortunately for the user, it didn’t work”. We’ll come back to this.

Coming After Patch 10.1 – Bronze Dragonflight Resolution

The first episode of Blizzard’s WoWCast Developer Chat went live on April 27th, where Blizzard developers Morgan Day and Maria Hamilton teased what would be coming after Dragonflight Patch 10.1. The cliff notes version is, the Bronze Dragonflight will reach a resolution, involving Nozdormu/Murozond, Chromie/Evil Chromie, time traveling, and Galakrond returning in some form.

While that’s very exciting, what does that have to do with Wrath of the Lich King Classic?

What if the Classic timeline has deviated from Retail World of Warcraft more than we are aware of? What if Murozond from the future has already been meddling with Classic’s timeline that Chromie ripped open with the Temporal Discombobulator? What if Murozond has been gaining power by altering Classic, ever so slightly?

Time Deviations in Classic (Speculation)

At first, it wasn’t a big deal… these seemed like mostly innocent changes. A Sons of Hodir Reputation Tabard coming out 8 months after Wrath of the Lich King Classic’s launch, that’s not suspicious at all, right?

What if I told you all of these changes aren’t even coming from Blizzard, but actually the work of Murozond? What if the Cataclysm expansion and everything that happened after the original Wrath was because someone had a Dud Holy Hand Grenade, and it just didn’t work?

Okay, this is quite alarming. Let’s say hypothetically, Murozond does appear in Dragonflight after 10.1. Murozond exists outside of time itself and if he were to attack Retail, would he simultaneously attack Classic? The item description says he is sending Zombie Horrors and Chromie wants us to use the item to stop him… What if the players in Classic’s timeline discover the real Holy Hand Grenade, only this time – it does work?
