Some datamining and evidence are pointing to a secret Dracthyr Evoker Legendary coming in Patch 10.1!

Warning: Some spoilers later in the post for Patch 10.1 campaign.

Details and Evidence

Here is some of the datamining and evidence that may indicate that a secret Dracthyr Evoker Legendary exists in Patch 10.1!

Evokers Interested Sarkareth Loot

In an EU Content Creator interview, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas was talking about special items such as the Evoker staff Kharnalex, The First Light, and how there aren’t any plans to standardize them, only doing it when it makes sense such as the Daggers or Legendary Bow from Sylvanas. However, he also noted that:

  • Evokers will probably be interested in what Commander Sarkareth may have for them when we get there though.

This is an interesting comment as Scalecommander Sarkareth has absolutely nothing that is Evoker specific or Evoker-interesting in the journal. There’s the Staff Erethos, the Empty Promise, and the Very Rare cloak Voice of the Silent Star but those can be used by any number of classes, hence why this comment stuck out as odd.

Datamining – SceneScriptText

From datamining, a couple strings have popped up in the SceneScriptText.db2 which reference “DracthyrLegendary”.

SceneScriptText.db2 includes information on how things should function in In Game Cutscenes (IGC). It is very interesting that there are 6 entries tied to a Dracthyr Legendary IGC though.

Secret Profession Recipes

In another EU Content Creator Interview, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas also noted that there were a couple things regarding professions that haven’t been seen on the PTR that should be a surprise come May.

This was a very interesting statement, as it seemed very curious that something regarding purposes was hidden. What purpose would that serve? It probably wouldn’t be a common gear related embellishment or recipe. Maybe related to a big secret, but maybe possibly connected to (re)crafting a Legendary Evoker weapon?

Our Frost Mage writer, Dorovon, looked into this and found some very interesting details. Thanks to him for sharing his findings:

  • There are three encrypted CraftingData/CraftingOrder records that exist, which probably means three recipes total.
  • There are two SpellReagents records encrypted with them, but they didn’t encrypt one of them.
  • They missed encrypting four ModifiedCraftingSpellSlot records, associated with three recipes.

The SpellReagents line that was not encrypted is a recipe that shows the following:

  • Spell ID 409224 is used to craft it (Encrypted)
  • Requires 240 of a Reagent with Item ID 205257 (Encrypted)
  • Requires 20 of a Reagent with Item ID 204857 (Encrypted)
  • 25 Awakened Order

The unencrypted ModifiedCraftingSpell Slot recipes indicates that:

These recipes seem fairly expensive from what is not encrypted and there are also more encrypted recipes that we know nothing about. Could they be expensive due to them being a Craftable Legendary weapon?

Miscellaneous Datamining

Dorovon also found some a couple other interesting finds.

First, there appears to be three encrypted SpellEmpowerStage entries in the database, but no actual empowered spell yet. This spell has the same number of stages as Fire Breath.

Second, in UI Map Assignment, one of the fields references an encrypted Area ID 14706. However, the other two entries are very interesting.

  • The UIMapID name is “The Maelstrom”. This is the name that you would see when you press “M” to open your map.
  • The MapID name is “Deathwing’s Final Moment”. This is an internal name that players won’t usually see and contains other information that it’s a Scenario, of Dragonflight, with the Dragon Isles loading screen.

Finally, Dorovon realized that it’s the same encryption key that is encrypting the encrypted stuff above, which makes it seem all connected.

Speculation and Discussion

I think this all leads to a craftable Legendary Evoker weapon that has an Empowered Spell effect with the quest starting from defeating Scalecommander Sarkareth in Aberrus.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AND LORE AHEAD

Of particular note, I would guess that this Legendary weapon will be Oathbinder and need recrafting. More on this later.

Legendary Weapon

Let’s start at the beginning. Ion Hazzikostas’ comments on something special dropping off of Sarkareth for Evokers is suspicious as there’s clearly something missing there, and I highly doubt he would have said anything if the team wasn’t 100% sure that they were doing this.

He also mentions how the Legendary weapons have to make sense, and of course previous Legendary weapons such as Rae’shalare, Death’s Whisper from Sylvanas or Shadowmourne from Icecrown Citadel are iconic powerful lore weapons. To me, this makes sense as part of the story of 10.1 currently focuses on the Dracthyr story and a particular Titan Artifact, Oathbinder, which takes the form of a Gauntlet.

For those who aren’t familiar with Oathbinder, here’s a brief write up from Neryssa:

Oathbinder is a titan artifact – A gauntlet that uses Order magic to control entities. Not much is known about its original purpose, but we learn that Neltharion uses it to aid in his conditioning of the Dracthyr as his “ultimate soldiers” in Dragonflight: Legacies Chapter 3. It is unknown how Neltharion came across Oathbinder, but as Zaralek Cavern has several titan vaults, he might have found while experimenting with the cavern. According to one of the Forbidden Reach lore books, written by a Dracthyr soldier, Oathbinder doesn’t really feel like a mind-control device, but instead something that created a connection to his fellow soldiers.

And when he stands before us, the Oathbinder aglow upon his fist, I do feel a unity of purpose. A connection to my kin.

Neltharion used Oathbinder to condition the Dracthyr up until Raszageth’s Forbidden Reach attack during the Primal Incarnates rebellion – Raszageth struck Oathbinder with lightning and damaged it, rendering it useless and removing Neltharion’s condition of the Dracthyr. Seeing no other way to stop the Primalists with the Dracthyr now seemingly regaining their free will, this is the decisive moment where Neltharion gives in to the Whispers of the Old Gods, striking a bargain and using their power to seal the Primal Incarnate deep within the Reach.

In Chapter 2 of the 10.1 campaign, we learn that the damaged Oathbinder were left in Nal Ks’kol, one of the aforementioned titan vaults in Zaralek Cavern, and Sarkareth is seeking this artifact. Nal Ks’kol was sealed by Neltharion to all but his highest ranking, most trusting soldiers – Which would include the Scalecommanders of the Dracthyr forces. With the help of Scalecommander Emberthal, we managed to gain access to Nal Ks’kol, but we arrive too late, as Sarkareth already gained access to the vault – and Oathbinder. As we dispatch the Sundered Flame forces in the area and reach Sarkareth, a currently encrypted cutscene plays out, with Sarkareth using Oathbinder to incapacitate the Dracthyr in the area:

Emberthal and the player step through to the next chamber. In the hallways behind, Ebyssian is tending to Dezran’s wounds.
A barrier forms behind the player and Emberthal. Sarkareth walks down the stairs, showing the Oathbinder–Neltharion’s broken glove.
He uses it, causing Emberthal and the other two Dracthyr to hold their head and become incapacitated – It is up to the player to defeat him.

At the end of the fight, a currently scripted cutscene plays – We do have a written description of the scene:

Sarkareth reels, having been attacked by the player. Emberthal shakes off her stupor and stands next to the player. Sarkareth (Exhausted): “No – the Oathbinder… is mine!”
Sarkareth reveals that he has been hearing the voice of their father, Neltharion, whispering to him about what to do. Emberthal understands that something is wrong with Sarkareth and offers help, but he runs away using a teleporter.
The door opens, Rannan and Ebyssian walk in.
Emberthal is looking at the two Sundered Flame Dracthyr that were abandoned.

In the end, Sarkareth escapes the struggle, but Oathbinder is left behind – Now a destroyed carcass of a titan artifact.

Oathbinder is a powerful artifact that I think would absolutely make sense as an Evoker legendary and Sarkareth is definitely involved in the current story of Oathbinder.

Questline

Most legendaries in World of Warcraft history have a lore-filled questline and based on the evidence above, I think this Legendary has one as well. Based on Ion’s comments, I speculate that the quest will start when you defeat Scalecommander Sarkareth. Past that, it’s hard to say exactly what will happen other than speculating that the Dracthyr will explore their legacy and the history of Oathbinder, and possibly reforge it and create their own legacy.

With the datamined MapAssignment entry that links to a new Scenario map called “The Maelstrom”, but internally called “Deathwing’s Final Moment”, it makes sense that in a patch all about the history of the Black Dragonflight, the Dracthyr, and Neltharion’s old labratory, part of this questline includes Neltharion and his final moments as Deathwing when players took him down in the Dragon Soul raid. I wonder what we exactly is going to find out here though.

But towards the end of the questline, after exploring the Dracthyr legacy, I think it makes sense that the Dracthyr try to reforge Oathbinder into something new and forge their own legacy — an artifact that was previously used to mind control them, reforged in order to make their own future. It’s poetic. The 240 (Encrypted Item) could require a certain number of Aberrus boss kills; maybe 10 per boss with a weekly lockout, with most Legendary quests in the past having a raid boss collection quest. With all the encrypted and unencrypted Crafting Recipes as well, it seems like crafting this Legendary Weapon will be relatively expensive, requiring many materials and a hefty chunk of gold. Of what we do know about, there’s Blacksmithing, Engineering and Jewelcrafting involved which does theoretically make sense when trying to repair a titan artifact, but only time will tell if this is correct. And of course, there’s the SceneScripts which will show an In Game Cutscene once we craft the weapon. It seems to all fit together.

Conclusion

There’s a lot of speculation here, but I would personally bet on:

  • A high chance of an Evoker questline that starts by defeating Scalecommander Sarkareth
  • A high chance on there being an Evoker-only Legendary weapon in the Patch
  • The legendary weapon itself being a recrafted Oathbinder.
  • The legendary weapon having to be crafted by multiple professions using a lot of expensive mats.
