How Good is Augmentation Evoker?

Augmentation Evoker looks to be able to contribute somewhere in the ballpark of 180k DPS at the moment in a simulated raid environment under the following conditions:

  • Season 2 best-in-slot gear on all characters.
  • Ideal timings and gameplay from the Augmentation Evoker.
  • Ideal timings and gameplay from the players that the Augmentation Evoker is buffing.
  • Selecting strong specializations to buff based on high burst potential, and the ability to align with Breath of Eons 2 minute cooldown.

You can definitely field at least one Augmentation Evoker without concern as long as you have a couple of strong players on either high-burst opener specs, or 2 minute cooldowns specs without losing too much from the idealized sim results. For the average group, Augmentation will find the most value buffing specs on a 2 minute damage cycle throughout a given fight due to alignment with Augmentation’s 2 minute cooldown Breath of Eons.

Augmentation Evoker is definitely looking very good currently whether you’re absolutely optimizing your buff timings, or just keeping buffs active on your strongest players. I would absolutely recommend raid groups that are on the fence to give Augmentation a try, even if you’re currently progressing through the raid.

How Does Augmentation Evoker Deal Damage?

Augmentation Evoker can be described as a “force multiplier”, and currently deals around 30% of their damage directly, while the other 70% of their contribution comes from layering various stacking buffs and damage multipliers onto other players.

  • The spec’s main buff is Ebon Might which gives all buffed players 10% of the Augmentation Evoker’s primary stat, making them do more damage!
  • The main cooldown of Augmentation Evoker is Breath of Eons which is a 2 minute cooldown. You want to sync this with other 2 minute cooldowns to do even more damage.
  • Another buff is Prescience, which provides 3% crit. This can be kept up on 2 targets at all times. While Prescience is active on the target, they have a chance to deal 15% more damage on each spell from Fate Mirror.
  • The third buff they have is Blistering Scales which increases Armor and deals minor damage whenever the target is meleed. At the moment, this is actually not worth putting on the tank as a DPS warrior gets more throughput from this ability through Armored to the Teeth.

Damage Meters and Logs

Since 70% of an Augmentation Evoker’s damage comes from buffing others, it’s important to know that in-game damage meters will NOT correctly show allocation of the damage to the Augmentation Evoker.

When viewed through in-game damage meters like Details, it will appear that the Augmentation Evoker is doing very little damage. Don’t fret! Just know that other DPS will be doing increased damage.

In-Game Damage Meters cannot correctly allocate damage that sources from the Augmentation Evoker.

However, if you /combatlog your runs and upload to Warcraft Logs, they will be able to separate the damage of the Augmentation Evoker. This will allow you to evaluate how you’re doing, and how the buffed players are doing without the Augmentation Evoker.

Warcraft Logs can correctly allocate damage that sources from the Augmentation Evoker.

Unfortunately due to this fact, Details meters will become a lot less useful when playing with an Augvoker.

Who Should I Prescience?

Things are still being investigated, but assuming equal gear, the following classes seem to be good in Patch 10.1.5 currently:

  • Frost Death Knight
  • Devastation Evoker
  • Enhancement Shaman
  • Shadow Priest

On pull, you may wish to buff the following specs due to their incredible on pull burst:

  • Arcane Mage
  • Unholy Death Knight

How Should Augmentation Evoker DPS?

Augmentation Evoker is a DPS and here’s a rough idea on how to DPS as an Augmentation Evoker.

  1. Pre-cast and maintain Prescience on two chosen DPS players.
  2. Pre-cast and maintain Blistering Scales on a tank (or DPS warrior).
  3. Use Ebon Might roughly on cooldown.
  4. Use Fire Breath on cooldown while Ebon Might is up to extend its duration and deal damage.
  5. Use Upheaval on cooldown while Ebon Might is up to extend its duration and deal damage.
  6. Use Breath of Eons to amplify your group’s damage and extend Ebon Might.
  7. Spend Essence Burst and Essence on Eruption.
  8. Generate Essence Burst and fill downtime with Living Flame (or Azure Strike).

Should I Play Augmentation Over Devastation?

At the end of the day, this is one that you’re going to have to decide for yourself, but here are the facts:

Augmentation has the potential in raid at the moment to contribute a fair bit more than any one other DPS spec when you’ve considered both their personal damage and all of the damage dealt through buffs. As long as you can line up your main group buffs Ebon Might and Breath of Eons with your raid’s major cooldowns, and can quickly pick up Augmentation’s damage rotation, you certainly won’t be a hindrance to your raid.

That said, Devastation is also one of the strongest 2 minute cooldown DPS specs in the game at the moment. Depending on your raid composition, it may be advisable to run both Devastation and Augmentation if your roster allows for it.

Of course, Augmentation’s damage scales directly with the damage of your allies. This means that more geared your fellow players are, the more effective you are as an Augmentation Evoker. If you find yourself playing with lower geared players in a Mythic+ dungeon or raid, you may simply be better off playing Devastation.
