Hello! Welcome to the 294th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!

This week we look at gold making opportunities in 10.1.7 and how the wider landscape has changed. There is also the matter of record high Token prices this week and we discuss Hardcore gold making!

My name is Samadan and I’ll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!

Gold Opportunities 10.1.7

With 10.1.7 around the corner, 10.2 announcement likely very soon and Token prices soaring, many players are looking ahead at the gold making landscape and wondering what’s next?

Hey community been playing dragonflight for awhile now and I cannot for the life of me figure out the direction that blizzard are going in terms of inserting gold into the economy.

The raw gold farms seem like a tenth of what they were in shadowlands. Like we had the mission table, callings and gold world quests and just general raw gold from quests and mobs.

In DF it seems like they have reduced the amount of raw gold that can be produced in the economy. The bots do majority of this just by consistency and the fact that it is automated.

In real world economics this is called quantitative tightening. More people have less gold coming in and the rich goblins are sitting on alot of money it’s like the poor people in game are like millenials/zoomers and the rich goblins are like boomers holding majority of the wealth.

Boomers tend to not spend money back into the economy, whereas the younger people tend to spend more money in the economy I’m all for that last thing we want is stagnation and to be honest it really feels like a big reset is coming in both the real world and the wow economy.

Last patch they introduced the Naxx t3 items but effectively it was designed to take more money out of the economy from the rich players more so than the poor. The poor would grind endlessly to serve the rich so to speak. Because any gold opportunity at the start of a patch only lasts a certain amount of time.

My question is what will they bring in next patch? Something similar to a gold sink more ways for people to buy tokens to buy stuff but essentially its a massive gold sink in my opinion and I would be surprised if the wow token rises more for NA.

So much gold exits the economy through redundant gear upgrades especially when the patch hype starts and everyone is on the grind. I literally can’t find the reasons to play much and I see alot of youtubers focusing on gold making have gone to other games.

Is wow dead what is the business model going forward, what does it mean for gold making. In all honesty unless your doing some degen gold making stuff and putting alot of hours into the game to make gold isn’t enough to value one’s time in the game.

Am I lost? Am I the only one who is thinking this way about the wow economy has anyone experience a decline for gold making opportunities let’s make a conversation about it.

Thanks for your time a long post and I hope to read your comments below. Cheers

It’s an interesting take with many assumptions that might not necessarily reflect what’s going on with the game and gold making as a whole. We are in a transition time where a lot of the “old school” methods of making gold are actively suppressed through changes in the systems.

  • Vendor sale values have been actively reduced thus reducing “raw gold” value of running old raids and dungeons. The flip side of this is that these items are cheaper to list on the AH because vendor price dictates deposit cost.
  • Mission Tables have been removed in DF, the first time since WoD where mission tables could be a source of gold for Alt armies. This has been replaced by some degree with Dragon Riding races, reasonable value WQ missions and bonuses to Dungeon Finder for needed classes.
  • Region-wide Auction house has increased competition for commodities and removed niches for particular servers. The flip side of this is that raw materials are much cheaper and more accessible to the wider playerbase.

While it is certain that the trend here is to make “easy raw gold” such as from vendor trash and alt armies in mission tables less viable. It’s clear that the focus has been to make the game more accessible and convenient to the wider playerbase.

The new profession system in Dragonflight introduced a great new complexity and interest to professions. However, in order to maximize making gold, players need to fully engage with the system and work orders in a way that many were simply not willing/inclined to do. It requires a large investment in time to get good at a particular profession and an equally large investment of time to market and sell your wares. Ultimately, these time investments exclude the “casual gold maker”.

From the perspective of DF, token price is up because there is a sale for Blizz games and services. The rise so far is consistent with what I have seen other times this happens or when Diablo came out, so that’s nothing new.

Raw gold… sort of. So yes, you can’t just park toons at the mission table and have auto gold, but there are a ton of WQs that take 5 seconds and give 5-600g. There is still easy gold to be made, but the really easy gold is effectively capped by WQ resets and/or require some sort of activity however small, which I don’t think is a bad thing.

I think opportunities are still everywhere BUT there is more competition for the lower hanging fruit due to YouTube guides AND you have to work at least on the set up to make big gold.

As with anything else in the game, it’s a game. If you don’t enjoy making gold anymore, try a different way to do it or don’t do it.

I do agree that in game gold sinks are a little much, mostly for vendor crafting mats as they cost more than the final product’s vendor value. While I understand they are trying to promote within-player sales, it would be nice to at least break even while leveling profs if you farm your own mats.

Edit: Also, have you the super easy fly around and dig things up strat? Raw gold. Not a huge ton of effort. Like I said, lots of ways, just slightly more effort than the mission table

Soaring Token Prices

We recently reported on the Token Prices hitting new highs. From a gold making perspective this obviously means it requires more gold than ever to buy a token to exchange for either Bnet Balance or game time.

This is typical around this time of an expansion and in conjunction with holiday sales and lulls in activity we are unlikely to see a significant drop in token prices until demand for gold spikes, usually just after an expansion launch.

If you are looking to make gold for game time and are struggling in Retail, there is always the secondary option of playing in WotLK Classic as the token price there remains low due to the higher demand for gold to spend on GDKP runs and the like..

I have been making gold in both Classic WotLK and Retail using techniques that work for someone with limited playtime as you can see in this video below ..

Hardcore Gold Making

With Classic Hardcore in full swing, many players are enjoying playing the Classic version of the game with all it’s depth and that includes enjoying the economy and making gold even if there is no Token to aim for.

Hi all,

I have decided i am going to leave the world of retail behind and casually play some HC.

It may seem like an odd avenue to go down but I am planning to slowly level my way up with my primary focus on being a complete titan of industry.

On retail I’m pretty good at making gold and while i will be doing my own research on what ways to play the AH etc i would love to hear any tips you guys may have on how to get my seed capital up and any success you have been having in the gold making world.

If you are using TradeSkillMaster as part of your gold making journey, you will be pleased to know that Hardcore AH data is available to all by default..

As for the gold making options themselves, there are a plethora of options!

In the beginning, bags are insanely valuable on a new server. You can start by crafting bags for 125% materials for example, the excess you craft into more bags that you sell for cash.

The learning from this concrete tip – everything that works on a new server applies to hardcore.

Tbh one of the best goldmaking methods is just leveling. If you ever leveled classic till 60, you will know the following.

Levels 1-20 you make absolute garbage, single digit gold. Levels 20-30, you may get into the double digits but fairly low. Levels 30-40, you suddenly make quite a bit more and by lvl 40, youre only a bit short on your 100g for the mount (unless you spent your money on too many spells or gear).

After you spend your 100g on the mount and have basically nothing, you lvl 40-60 and at 60 you suddenly have hundreds of gold, I myself had 400, some people have less, some people have 600 and more.

Fact of the matter is, high lvl quests and mobs net so much more gold than youre able to collect by some professions tactics at low lvls. Of course, all the tips you were given here will work, but this is the most important thing. You gotta lvl up too.

And please remember to keep sending your gold to a bank alt in case you die.

Yes, gold may be limited right now, but the opportunities are there and the ways players are interacting with each other and market opportunities will rise from that. It’s a fresh new landscape with the emphasis on the journey. As players progress and send spare gold to alts, the beginning gear and expenditure will start to rotate in higher and higher demand.

Removed Items Returning in 10.1.7

As part of the ongoing updates to the game world, old items that were previously removed are going to see a comeback in 10.1.7!

Hundreds of zone drops and rare spawn drops lost to the Cataclysm have been faithfully (or near-faithfully) restored. Good luck on your transmog hunts!

This is great news for the transmog farmers out there looking for long lost items with a special look. Have a look at this filter and sort by slot. I would imagine any unique weapons, helms & chest pieces that have a unique look will be highly valuable.

Studen Albatroz has a video going through a few items he has found already on the PTR..
