With the latest Patch 10.2 build, a new questline starring Wrathion is available! We completed the questline to bring you all the details.

WARNING: Patch 10.2 Story Spoilers in this post!

Wrathion starts his questline in the Central Encampment with the quest A Dragon in Hand is Worth Two in the Roost, where he asks us to embark with him on a journey to seek out potential allies to help with the defense of Amirdrassil.

Wrathion mentions that Sabellian mentions a brood in Outland known as the Netherwing – Yes, the Netherwing we met in Outland! Their representative is in Valdrakken and we are supposed to meet them there.

There is a fun dialogue option in this part where Wrathion talks about the Netherwing to us – However, if you have worked with them before, there is an option where YOU talk about them – And apparently, our knowledge goes further than Sabellian’s!

> Tell me of the Netherwing.
I confess, I have not met them myself.
Sabellian however, has provided some helpful information about them.
They were created from nether energies that mixed with the black dragon eggs stored in Outland. Apparently, they are entirely separate from Sabellian’s brood… but when you think upon it, they are still our direct kin.
I suppose we both have bizarre circumstances surrounding our origins.

> I have helped the Netherwing before. I can tell you about it.
<You tell Wrathion of your time with the Netherwing.
How you worked with their leaders to infiltrate and ultimately free their flight from the Dragonmaw in Outland.
Wrathion listens with rapt attention.>
Thank you <player>, you are a font of knowledge! This is more than Sabellian was able to tell me.

We’re then sent to Valdrakken to speak with their representative in Draconic Diplomacy. As we leave for Valdrakken, Wrathion convinces Vyranoth to join the cause – Although Vyranoth’s reception is initially cold, she’s interested once Wrathion mentions them never being part of the Aspects.

Wrathion: Lady Vyranoth, <player> and I will be meeting potential new allies in defense of the world tree. Would you care to join?
Vyranoth: No.
Wrathion: I see. I thought perhaps you would be interested in meeting dragons that were never part of the Aspects and their flights. A thousand parsons.
Wrathion: Wait, I am listening.
Wrathion: Then let me tell you of the Netherwing…

As we arrive in Valdrakken, we see that the Netherwing envoy is none other than Mordenaku, their prince! Those who quested with him in Outland may remember his visage form, Mordenai. Mordenaku will also remember you if you’ve worked with them!

Wrathion: <Player> has been telling me all about you, Prince Mordenaku.
Mordenaku: <Player> is here? I look forward to meeting them again!
Wrathion: Ah! Your timing, as always, is impeccable, <Player>.
Wrathion: But the Aspects would appreciate the aid of the Netherwing in helping to protect the new world tree.
Mordenaku: Normally, me and my flight would do anything to help <Player>. However, you want us to go to war.
Mordenaku: If you want us to endanger ourselves, what will you give in return?

Wrathion: Well, we–
Vyranoth: –if I may, Wrathion?
Wrathion: Of course.
Vyranoth: Wrathion has told me of your Outland… a harsh place. Your flight would benefit from safer spaces. You are true dragons. This isle is a home for every flight.
Vyranoth: The Valdrakken Accord has accepted me, though I was an enemy. They will accept you. Your flight will flourish here.
Wrathion smiles.
Mordenaku furrows his brow in thought.
Mordenaku: A proper home for my flight, safety for our eggs, and wings outstretched in welcome.
Mordenaku: These are what my flight desires.

Wrathion then starts thinking about the things Mordenaku asks for, starting with a roost for the Netherwing to settle in, in A Dragon’s Eye View. We’re sent to the caves overlooking the Temporal Conflux, the ones with a lot of spiders in them. Vyranoth gives us an enchantment allowing us to relocate the spiders (instead of killing them) in Cavern Clearing.

With the cavern cleared out of spiders, our next step is to ensure the safety of the Netherwing eggs. We go to the Ruby Lifeshrine in An Eggcelent Idea and speak with Mother Elion, the Black Dragonflight eggtender. As we arrive there, Wrathion and Mordenaku bond over being altered before hatching.

Mordenaku: You went through all of that, before you had even hatched?
Wrathion: Hard to believe, I know–but I believe your people have a much deeper understanding of what it means to be altered in the shell than most.
Mordenaku: We do. Strange… it is as though you and I are kin in more ways than one.
Mordenaku: Do not mistake my words, however. Our shells may have been kin to your own, but we have since developed our own flight, and our own culture.
Wrathion: I would like to hear more of your people… when we have time.

Mother Elion is elated over the idea of nurturing for a new flight, and has you bring bettle snacks for the whelps in Delectable Delicacies.

After Elion has the beetle snacks and is instructed on how to take care of the Netherwing whelps, we return to the Roasted Ram Inn in Valdrakken for some rest in Home in Time for Tea. You can talk a bit with Mordenaku here to learn about how he’s spent time in Outland, and even mention the events of Legion to him!

> How have you been since we freed your flight?
I have been doing well, dealing with living in Outland.
Vicious monsters. Ravaged landscape. The usual.
I understand Illidan was resurrected recently and helped save Azeroth? I find that hard to imagine.
Ah, but enough about my thoughts!
<Player>, you have helped so much. Your tales are already popular among my flight for your actions in freeing us.
I hope you are ready for your legend to double after today!

With the Netherwing secure in the Dragon Isles, Wrathion has another flight in mind: the Thorignir, the Storm Dragons we meet in Stormheim. We start talking about recruiting them in The Thorignir. Wrathion has mentioned their story to Vyranoth… who does not take a liking to Odyn.

Wrathion:
Now we turn our attention to the Thorignir.
Vyranoth seems to be quite invested in their future, wouldn’t you say?

> What did you tell her?
Only that Keeper Odyn uplifted another flight of dragons to be his personal chauffeurs, lackeys and lapdogs.
<Wrathion ponders a moment.>
There’s also the bit about insisting the dragons did not deserve to defend the world, and the part about selling his eye for forbidden knowledge, and that whole “subjecting an adopted child to an eternity of torment to suit his needs” moment, as well as abandoning his duties as prime designate…
But those affronts don’t seem to… disturb her quite as much as the treatment the storm dragons have received.

Vyranoth:
<The air around Vyranoth is significantly cooler. Although she appears to be calm, it is clear that something has deeply upset her.>

> Is everything all right?
Wrathion has been telling me about the storm drakes. The Thorignir and their… “creator”.
Odyn.
He has virtually enslaved these dragons, after declaring dragons unworthy of protecting Azeroth!

We arrive at Thorim’s Peak in Stormheim and talk to Thrymjaris, the mother of the Thorignir. She tells us that the storm drakes did hear the call of the Dragon Isles, but could not go, as Odyn forbid them to, as servants created by him and to attend to him.

Vyranoth is very upset with Odyn, and we’re sent to the Halls of Valor to defeat Odyn in Dragon Keeping. We make our way through the Halls and eventually confront Odyn.

Wrathion: The Halls of Valor host some of Odyn’s most trusted allies.
Vyranoth: Alles? Enforcers and slaves, more likely.
Vyranoth: Come, whelps. We shall confront this “guardian” Hymdall.
Wrathion: I expect this will be interesting.
Vyranoth: Child of storms! You need not to be a slave to your rider! Rise and be free!

Eyir: Dragon! Prepare to face my wrath!
Vyranoth: Stay your hand, valkyr. This is a matter between my kind and your master.
Eyir: Honor compels me to stop you, dragon.
Vyranoth: Then you have more honor than Odyn.
Vyranoth: The same honor that the Thorignir hold. They remain here though they are called to a greater cause–protecting Azeroth.
Vyranoth: Stand aside, Eyir. This matter does not involve you.
Eyir: May your battle prove worthy, dragon.
Vyranoth: And yours as well, should you ever choose that path. Your arrogant keeper has not treated his servants with respect… or truth.

Wrathion: When I told you of Odyn, I didn’t expect such an… explosive response.
Vyranoth: A likely story, whelp. You knew I would not abide such hypocrisy.
Wrathion: Well, I–
Vyranoth: Own it and just be glad I have not eaten everyone here. I am being diplomatic.

Wrathion: Ah, Odyn! We’d like to have a word with you. Several, actually.
King Ranulf shifts awkwardly and looks at the others.
Odyn: Most impressive! I never thought I would meet anyone who could match the Valarjar’s strength–
Wrathion: Save your words, keeper. Are you really too cowardly to face us yourself?
Odyn: Impudent whelp! You dare insult the ruler of the Valarjar? Face me, then!
Vyranoth: Coward. Hypocrite. Liar!
Vyranoth: You come to this world, and demand its children bow to you? You dare?
Vyranoth: You claimed dragons were not fit to protect Azeroth, yet you bound them as your servants!
Vyranoth: You call them “born of gods”, and claim ownership of their greatness!
Vyranoth: The Thorignir were and are great without you. Their honor keeps them bound here, but you have never earned it!

As we lower Odyn’s health to 80%, we’re abruptly ported back to Amirdrassil, which probably means there will be a cutscene at this point. This is where the questline ends, but you can see the Netherwing and the Thorignir in Amirdrassil, ready to help defend the world tree!
