How to Get Into Follower Dungeons
To start a follower dungeon, simply open your Dungeons & Raids window and check the Dungeon Finder tab. A new queue category will be available: Follower Dungeons. As of the first Patch 10.2.5 PTR build, all 8 Dragonflight dungeons are available on Normal Mode in Follower difficulty.
Follower Dungeon Basics
Once you zone in to a follower dungeon, you will have a party of 4 NPCs with you when queueing solo! When queueing as a DPS, your party will be composed of the following NPCs from the Dragonscale Expedition. These are all NPCs you originally met during the Exile’s Reach campaign.
When inside a follower dungeon, you will receive a new ability – Dungeon Assistance, which toggles the NPCs into either following you or having themselves lead the way.
- When in following mode, NPCs will follow you and engage with mobs only if you attack them first.
- When in leading mode, NPCs will progress through the dungeon by themselves, acting like a normal group would.
One thing worth noticing is that NPCs will only charge forward and attack mobs, and will not do any other dungeon tasks – As an example, in Brackenhide Hollow, you’re the one who will need to physically free all Tuskarr captives, even if your NPC party is kept in leading mode! So in dungeons with specific pathing or objectives, it is usually better to use Following mode and you dictate what the NPCs will attack or not.
In my short experience playing follower dungeons, the AI is actually quite sophisticated, being able to quickly react to situations like accidentally pulling side packs and reacting to mobs running away at low health, but it is not very good with things like interrupting targets that are not their main focus or CCing in general – So this is something players experiencing Follower dungeons will need to take care of themselves. Another interesting thing is, Meredy will give you food at the start of each dungeon.
During boss fights, you may even notice things like Meredy casting Time Warp for your party! I’ve also tested things like going low health (which will get you immediately healed to full if not a one-shot), or getting hit by a trap (which will get you hit with a Hand of Freedom from Garick).
Here’s a snippet of the last boss in Brackenhide Hollow, so you can see the NPCs in action! You can even witness the NPCs immediately swapping to the Rotburst Totem once it spawns.
Loot is given as if it would in a normal dungeon – You can get loot from bosses, but it is not guaranteed. In the test run for this post, I received loot from 1 boss out of the 4 in Brackenhide Hollow.
And as a funny final bit, if you do happen to die in a follower dungeon, the NPCs will ragequit on you! (But don’t worry, they will respawn once you release.) Thanks MrGM for finding out!
