Constant Iteration

Public events have been a sort of social experiment in Dragonflight, iterating on Legion Assaults and pre-patch activities from prior expansions, ensuring players always have reasons to log in and something to do, though they haven’t always landed how devs wanted them to.

Each new public event has diluted the crowd working on previous ones – the developers heard feedback regarding less popular events being difficult to complete solo or in smaller group sizes after the initial hype for it dies down.

“We started, however, to see a shift that people were feeling the strain of needing a lot of players to complete both Researches Under Fire and the rare elites, so there wasn’t as much content for solo players to do.”

Soloing Superbloom

The Superbloom is one-half of Patch 10.2’s new event, protecting the ancient Sprucecrown as he performs rituals to empower Amirdrassil. Along the way, players will face various hurdles including waves of enemies and bosses typical of public event.

Unlike previous events, the developers wanted to make sure it’s soloable, so different amounts of enemies will now spawn based on the number of nearby players. Additionally, they’ve added some new tech for the final boss stage, allowing any number of players to finish it.

“ gives you this buff called Lone Wolf’s Courage. You’re trying to do this alone? Good for you! Have this massive buff. You get really strong and really powerful so you’re actually able to solo the elite. It only happens if you have a couple of people, or if you’re completely alone–as soon as there’s more people around, the buff doesn’t happen. It’s just to help those smaller groups still have that epic moment, so we don’t take that huge battle away by spawning a weaker creature. Instead, you get to be even cooler.”

The Emerald Frenzy is the second half, a mob farming event triggered upon completion of the event, while Dreamseed planting can be done at any time – allowing players to start and contribute to short dynamic activities at any time. Mini events like this are an attempt to move away from “rare elite murderballs,” by giving players an engaging alternative.

“This activity is always available,” she explained. “When you run out of everything else to do, instead of going to fight rare elites, this time you will hopefully want to do the Emerald Bounty, plant some seeds, and get some people together.”
