The Tyr’s Guard was a secret order of Paladins dedicated to protecting Tyr’s tomb. All but decimated by the Scourge, the last surviving member, Travard, has stood alone for many years. This all changed in Dragonflight’s most recent chapter – where the Tyr’s Guard has finally made an official return!

The New Tyr’s Guard

The reforging of Tyr has been an ongoing story throughout Dragonflight. In the most recent chapter, one of Azeroth’s most famous institutions was reforged – the Tyr’s Guard.

Originally a Vrykul order, the Tyr’s Guard was created to stand guard over Tyr’s tomb in Tirisfal. Over time, the Vrykul began to add humans to their ranks, and the Tyr’s Guard finally became an order of Paladins.

The Tyr’s Guard was all but wiped out by the Scourge during the Third War, until only a handful – led by the paladin Travard – remained. During the events of Legion, the tomb partially collapsed, burying the body of Tyr and its secrets. Still, Travard, now the only remaining member of the Tyr’s Guard, resumed his vigil alone.

During the events of Dragonflight, Travard has finally left the tomb – which is now completely buried – to help with the efforts to resurrect Tyr. A new vessel has been created, one that will serve as Tyr’s body, but in order to resurrect the Keeper the disc containing his memories needs to be retrieved – a disc that was originally in Uldaman, but which the Infinite seems to have hidden in a version of the Nighthold, where Elisande still rules.

Before the Tyr’s Guard was officially formed, the Vrykul who created the order were Tyr’s champions, dedicated to serving the Keeper. It seems that this new Tyr’s Guard will be the same – no longer protecting a tomb, but devoted simply to Tyr himself. At the moment, this means that the Tyr’s Guard’s primary focus is to retrieve the disc of Tyr’s memories, and help restore the Keeper to life – a story we expect to see wrap up in 10.2.

Each new recruit represents one of the principles that the Tyr’s Guard adheres to, and each has a unique story to explain why they’ve joined. Hadwin, Exemplar of Justice, is a former Kul Tiran Inquisitor from Drustvar.

Hadwin, Exemplar of Justice

How did you become a member of Tyr’s Guard?
I’m not sure myself. Fell into it, I guess. Like I always do.
My dad wanted me to join the navy. and my mum hoped I’d be a tidepriest. But I’m cracking good at swinging a blunt object, if I do say so myself, and got on with the Order of Embers when Lady Waycrest asked for volunteers to fight witches in Drustvar.
But strange as it seems, I started to feel a connection to the Light working as an Inquisitor. I can’t explain it. I worship I the Tidemother! It caused me to seek out the Silver Hand and train as a paladin. But even then I wasn’t satisfied. I came to the Dragon Isles to forge my own path and follow my own code, righting wrongs wherever I found them.
Travard and Koranos found me, and the rest is history.
Why are you the Exemplar of Justice?
VVhat? You mean you can’t tell? I’m Insulted, I am.
I’m joking. of course. If only we could tell who was just by looking at ’em…
Right and wrong has always been important to me even when I was just a lad. My mum ran a shop in Bridgeport growing up. When dad went off to sea. local ruffians started stealing from her and harassing her. She tried to stop it, but the law men in the town did nothing.
I went hungry a lot growing up because of that injustice, but what was worse was how it affected my mum. I resolved then to stamp out injustice wherever I found it. And that’s what I’ve been doing. Travard just put a name on it.
Here’s your tabard and shield, Hadwin.
Travad says: Hadwin, like this shield, let your sense of right and wrong protect you as you serve Tyr.
Travad says: I became a paladin to fight for what was right. Now as a part of the Tyr’s Guard, I’ll do the same.

Valunei, Exemplar of Compassion, is a Lightforged Draenei from Argus, who has felt lost ever since losing her mentor, but recently found meaning again in the Tyr’s Guard.

Valunei, Exemplar of Compassion

How did you become a member of Tyr’s Guard?
On Argus, we were always threatened by the Legion. I do not like fighting, but I became a paladin to protect my people.
I learned the ways of the Light from a vindicator named Iriska. She taught me how to swing a mace, how to heal the injured, and how to face demons without giving in to fear.
But I lost her. When I came to Azeroth, I was lost as well. Travard and Koranos found me wandering the Dragon Isles, easing whatever suffering I found.
Travard told me more about Tyr, and I knew then I wanted to become part of the Tyr’s Guard.
Why are you the Exemplar of Compassion?
I am… humbled that Travard would give me that title…
But, really, being compassionate is the only way I can be. Perhaps I am shaped by countless years fighting the Legion. The fel were notorious for inflicting suffering wherever they went. I have seen much pain in my years, <name>. No one deserves to suffer–no one–and everyone deserves help. That, I suppose, is why I was chosen as the exemplar of compassion.
Here’s your tabard and shield, Valunei.
Travard says: Valunei, like Tyr you have great compassion for the weak. Protect them and yourself with this shield.
Valunei says: I will stand for the weak and innocent–just like Tyr did!

Nolaki, Exemplar of Sacrifice, is a Zandalari Troll who was too young to fight in the Battle of Drazar’alor, but who lost a mentor and friend to that conflict.

Nolaki, Exemplar of Sacrifice

How did you become a member of Tyr’s Guard?
I trained under our Champion of the Light, Ra’wani Kanae. When Ra’wani fought in the Battle of Dazar’alor, I stayed behind. I was young and green and thought I would make no difference.
But when Ra’wani fell defending our city without me, I vowed I would use the Light to my last breath to save all the lives I could.
That call brought me to the Wakin’ Shores. And that is where the man Captain Travard and the Watcher Koranos found me and told me about Tyr. I found purpose in stories about his heroics. And so I am a recruit for Tyr’s Guard now.
Why are you the Exemplar of Sacrifice?
It is because we trolls practice troll sacrifice.
<NoIaki doubles over laughing.>
That was a joke! You should have seen your face now!
“Sacrifice” may sound strange. Maybe “self-sacrifice” or “selflessness” would be better. But you know these old organizations. Tradition is tradition.
Tyr never sacrificed anything or anyone but himself. He reminds me of Ra’wani. She sacrificed everything for the Zandalari. And I would have traded places with her in a heartbeat.
I think I’m the exemplar of sacrifice because Travard knows I will fight until my last breath for my people and my new friends. Even Hadwin! Ha ha ha ha ha!
Here’s your tabard and shield, Nolaki.
Travard says: Nolaki, your selflessness is inspiring. May your shield serve you as well as your selflessness serves the Tyr’s Guard.
Nolaki says: Tyr was the selfless one! He sacrificed himself for the vrykul. I can only look up to his example!

Finally, Talthis, the Exemplar of Order, is a Blood Knight who has been searching for a way to see order restored ever since the fall of Silvermoon.

Talthis, Exemplar of Order

How did you become a member of Tyr’s Guard?
When I was young, I remember Silvermoon falling to the Scourge. My world was turned upside down.
Later, the city was taken back and restored. But I still wanted to protect my city–my civilization–from that chaos and carnage. The threat still yet lingered in the Dread Scar…
I looked to the Light for guidance and strength against the Scourge. I joined the Blood Knights, but then wandered to the Dragon Isles, searching for others in need of safety and protection from the Primalist’ chaos.
When Travard found me, I was fighting at the Flashfrost Assault, trying to restore order there. He and Koranos assisted me and then told me of Tyr and Tyr’s guard. And now I am here and all is right with the world!
Why are you the Exemplar of Order?
Some have had peaceful lives and may not see the value of order. But it does seem like we are often beset by forces of disorder and chaos and need more order in our lives.
I was a child when the Lich King attacked. Seeing all that disorder… it made its mark on me. I have lived to see Deathwing, the Legion invasion, the Fourth War…
Order means the sun rises every morning. Order means children grow up with their parents. I want to be part of that. I want to instill order on our disordered world and that’s why I exemplify that virtue in the Tyr’s Guard.
Here’s your tabard and shield, Talthis.
Travard says: Talthis… your ongoing fight for order is admirable. May this tabard and shield protect you on your final trial.
Talthis says: Thank you. I will keep this armor in good order and use it to further the cause of the Tyr’s Guard.
