On This Day - Patch 1.6: Assault on Blackwing Lair Launched Seventeen Years Ago on July 12th, 2005

On this day, July 12, 2005, Patch 1.6: Assault on Blackwing Lair launched. The new new raid ventured deep into Blackrock to take on Nefarian and defeat his wicked plans. In a thematic contrast that could be no greater, the Darkmoon Faire opened its gates to us for the first time.

Nefarian’s sanctum, Blackwing Lair, can be found at the very height of Blackrock Spire. It is there in the dark recesses of the mountain’s peak that Nefarian has begun to unfold the final stages of his plan to destroy Ragnaros once and for all and lead his army to undisputed supremacy over all the races of Azeroth. Blackwing Lair is a max-level, 40-player raid dungeon, with many new encounters and tempting rewards awaiting the intrepid adventurer that dares enter its halls. — Patch 1.6

New Raid: Blackwing Lair

In the dark recesses of the mountain’s peak, Nefarian, the eldest son of Deathwing, conducts some of his most awful experimentation, controlling mighty beings like puppets and combining the eggs of different dragonflights with horrific results. Should he prove successful, even darker pursuits rest on the horizon.

And, yet, the Lord of Blackrock is not a mere scientist – he is a great dragon cornered in his lair. Can he truly be defeated by mortal hands?

Blackwing Lair was a 40-person raid with 8 bosses and the notorious suppression room:

It’s not that we have problems there (not counting the two wipes last thursday, where we had a hunter ninjapull some far off dragonkin by accident, then respawn as we tried to run through the already cleared room…), but it’s just so tedious! We have quite a few AoE people in our usual raid setup (healing is typically three priests and 2 druids + 8 or so shammies, a combo we killed the Broodlord with:)), so taking care of the whelps is no problem. We have disciplined members, so the moving along is no problem. Tanks know which mob to pick up when, so it all goes more or less smoothly along.

and still…

I hate that place! The silly traps push my fps under 3.0, which is usually bad for a tank. The constant noise is starting to freak me out after 2 minutes. I feel stressed even though I have hardly anything to do. I want to “have a talk” with the designer who thought about this little bump on the road to Nefarian. Just gimme five minutes!

We do not have the Broodlord on farm yet. We walk in, start clearing the whelps, Orcs and Dragonkin, and as soon as we start moving, dread grips a hold of us. OMG, we might have to do this again! Oh noes!

Why isn’t there a big switch you can throw once you are at the Broodlord that disables respawns and the traps? Does Blizzard take joy from our misery? I know it not, but, for those who haven#t figured it out yet: I hate The Suppression Room with a vengeance. — Player Tarabulus, 2006

For those on the legendary quest, Elementium Ingot was found as a rare drop from the Blackwing Technicians that inhabit the lair. This ore was used to smelt Enchanted Elementium Bar, needed for Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker. Learning Smelt Enchanted Elementium required a Priest to Mind Control Master Elemental Shaper Krixix in order to use one of its abilities to teach a friendly target Smelt Enchanted Elementium.

Many players still run Blackwing Lair for its distinctive weapons, including Claw of the Black Drake, Dragonbreath Hand Cannon, and Chromatically Tempered Sword.

New Feature: Darkmoon Faire

A gathering of the exotic from around the world and beyond, Silas Darkmoon has brought together the Darkmoon Faire as a celebration of the wondrous and mysterious found in Azeroth. While the Faire spends most of their time in parts unknown, they do stop from time to time in Mulgore and Elwynn forest. When the faire is on its way barkers will stop by Ogrimmar and Ironforge to announce its arrival.

The greatest show on Azeroth started right here, long before Silas Darkmoon allowed us to set foot on his private island.

Patch 1.6: Assault on Blackwing Lair may not be the most storied of patches, but it was a healthy and imaginative addition to the new game that has repercussions to this day. Maybe this dragon filled raid will play a part in the story that we are looking forward to, and the history of our new expansion, Dragonflight.
