New Raid: Ny’alotha, the Waking City

Delve into where nightmares dwell in Ny’alotha, the Waking City, a 12-boss raid set in the Void-shrouded heart of the ancient Black Empire. Confront mad heralds and inscrutable horrors, and ultimately go eye-to-eyes with N’Zoth himself in a fateful battle for Azeroth’s survival.

Ny’alotha was a 12 Boss raid instance with an entrance which switched locations between Uldum and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

M+ Affix: Awakened

The Awakened seasonal affix for M+ Dungeons added obelisks that would pull players into a shadow realm, allowing interesting new challenges and routes in each dungeon. This affix placed four Black Empire obelisks in the dungeon. These could be used by players to cross into N’zoth’s realm. While in the N’zoth realm, players had to deal with a Lieutenant, and were completely phased from reality allowing mob skips without a rogue. If a Lieutenant was not dealt with, they would be added to the final boss encounter.

Allied Races

Two Allied races were added, Vulpera for Horde and Mechagnome for Alliance. The hugely popular Vulpera saw sworn Alliance players rolling Horde characters and left the Mechagnomes, which many felt were little more than a cosmetic option for Gnomes, out in the cold.

Assaults in Uldum and Pandaria

The Old God N’Zoth has been freed from his titanwrought prison, unleashing destruction and terror across Azeroth. N’Zoth’s forces are gathered to lay siege on the titan facilities in Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms. If these ancient defenses are ruined, N’Zoth will turn his nightmare visions into reality.

Assaults saw Uldum and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms visually revamped to bring them up to the present in a brilliant show of how reusing old zones can be very pertinent to the present game. Filled with quests, dailies, rares, and treasures, including new mounts and pets, the Assaults kept max level players well occupied. Getting to play in present versions of past content added pangs of nostalgia as well a a fantastic sense of where those places went after we left.

Horrific Visions of N’zoth

Horrific Visions saw us battling our own sanity to explore possible futures for Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Challenging max level content, Horrific Visions were welcome to some players and frustrating to others. The built in repetitive nature of the Visions, designed to be visited over and over with each visit making the next just a little easier, in theory, discouraged many early on, but left those who persisted able to gain nice rewards including pets, mounts, and transmog items.

Corrupted Gear, Essences, and the Legendary Cloak

The Borrowed Power paradigm continued with a new addition to the Heart of Azeroth: Essences, a new gear affix: Corruption, and a new Legendary gear piece: Ashjra’kamas, Shroud of Resolve. The three systems worked together to empower and counter each other, allowing for more customization in theory, but, once again, a “best” combination that many felt the need to grind for.

Deepwind Gorge Battleground

The Deepwind Gorge Battleground received a revamp. Modeled after Arathi Basin, the new Deepwind Gorge is a points race with capture points to control.

And more…

  • Preordering Shadowlands allowed a player to create a Death Knight of any race.
  • The Auction House got an overhaul, making both buying and selling significantly easier.
  • New Brawl: Teeming Islands, a large scale 10v10 PvP Island Expedition on the Havenswood and Jorundall islands.
  • New Pet Battle Dungeon: Blackrock Depths.
  • Mage Tower bear form got its own /dance animation.
  • New Heritage Armor: Worgen and Goblin.

Overall, Visions of N’Zoth was a very meaty patch. It’s hard to believe that it was only two years ago.
