In the new Blue Dragonflight questline, we visit the Veiled Ossuary – an area in Thaldraszus that once acted as the graveyard for the Blue Dragonflight – to help prepare the area so that the remaining essences of Malygos and Sindragosa can finally be put to rest. Part of our preparations involves putting up new gravestones – as well as updating some older stones – to reflect the deaths of those Blue Dragons who have passed on since leaving the Dragon Isles.

The Gravestones

Updating the gravestones requires adjusting a lot of names, including several that we recognize: Malygos of course, Umbrelskul, Eldragosa, Saragosa, Arygos, Balacgos, and Sapphiron.

Most of the names listed on the new gravestones are dragons we’ve never met before, apart from three – Tarecgosa, Kaldrigosa, and Madrigosa.

Causes of Death

While we don’t know the details for all these dragons, we’ve expanded on the ones we do know below.

Malygos – Slain by Adventurers

When the previous Aspect of the Blue Dragonflight decided to wage war on mortal magic users, we were forced into what became known as the Nexus War. The Red Dragonflight chose to defend the mortal races, and we were eventually victorious against Maylgos, who we killed in the Eye of Eternity raid.

Umbrelskul – Unknown (Azure Vault Boss)

Umbrelskul is Malygos’s son, and the final boss of the Azure Vault. Millennia ago, Umbrelskul meddled with raw arcane power, which caused him to become riddled with crystaline growths. He was kept in the Azure Vault in the hopes that a cure would be found. Sadly, he was never cured, and by the time we encounter him, we have no choice but to slay him.

Eldragosa – Unknown (Violet Hold Boss)

By the time most players encountered Eldragosa, she had already been transformed into the frost wyrm Shivermaw – one of the bosses in Violet Hold. However, Frost Mages during Legion may remember meeting her ghost in Dalaran during the quest Memories of Ebonchill. The rumours have always been that she was one of Sindragosa’s own brood – her placement on the same gravestone as Malygos and Sindragosa confirms that.

Saragosa – Slain by Unknown Adventurer

A prime consort to Malygos, Saragosa died during the Nexus War at the hands of the player and the Red Dragon Keristrasza. She was the mother to Arygos and Kirygosa.

Arygos – Slain by the Infinite Dragonflight

Malygos’s son, Arygos was once Kalecgos’s chief rival for the position of Blue Dragon Aspect. In his determination to secure the leadership position, Arygos aligned himself with Deathwing. Though he believed they would help make him Aspect, Arygos was betrayed and killed by the Infinite Dragonflight, who used his blood to help bring the chromatic dragon Chromatus to life.

Balacgos – Slain by Own Creation

Malygos’s son, Balacgos designed a special device to absorb unharnessed magical energy. Unfortunately, due to a miscalculation, when he attempted to activate the devbice, it absorbed his magic and left him an empty husk.

Arcanagos – Slain by Medivh

Arcanagos was good friends with Aegwynn, most powerful Guardian in history and Medivh’s mother. When the Dark Portal was opened, Arcanagos travelled to Karazhan with Aegwynn to confront Medivh. Fully possessed by Sargaras by this time, Medivh attacked, and Arcanagos was utterly destroyed in the fight, burned to the bone by Sargaras. Medivh later transformed Arcanagos into Nightbane, an undead dragon and a boss in the Karazhan raid.

Sapphiron – Slain by the Lich King

Sapphiron once lived in the mountains of Northrend, where he collected and guarded a hoard of powerful artifacts. He was killed by Arthas Menethil and raised as a frost wyrm, eventually sent to guard Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramus. Most recently, Kel’Thuzad summoned Sapphiron in Maldraxxus – and a shard of his soul was discovered in the Jailer’s tower.

Tarecgosa – Self Sacrifice

We know Tarecgosa from Cataclysm, where she played a major role in the questline to obtain the legendary staff Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest. During this questline, Arygos sent Twilight Dragons to murder Kalecgos – Tarecgosa sacrificed herself to save Kalecgos’s life. To save her spirit, Kalecgos bound her first to the player and later to Dragonwrath, which she chose as her permanent home. The staff gave players the ability to transform into Tarecgosa – and for those who own the staff, a special questline grants Tarecgosa’s Visage as a mount!

Kaldrigosa – Slain by dwarves

Kaldrigos is a dragon that can be learned about through Archeology. Specifically the artifacts of the four dwarves who fought the dragon, the Dented Shield of Horuz Killcrow,

The grave mistake made by Horuz when he and his companions fought the great wyrm Kaldrigos cost the storied warrior his life. He stood directly behind the dragon. Never do that.

Notched Sword of Tunadil the Redeemer,

This blade was broken when the paladin fell upon it while fighting the dread wyrm, Kaldrigos.

Scorched Staff of Shadow Priest Anund,

This wooden staff has been thoroughly blackened by arcane breath. Such was the fate of its wielder as well.

and Silver Kris of Korl.

It is etched with the blood of the dread wyrm Kaldrigos’ dying heart.

Anund’s Bandages, a junk item from Legion also makes reference to the battle,

“Korl won’t admit that Anund was trying to heal himself through Kaldrigos’s arcane breath with these.”

Madrigosa – Slain by Brutallus

Madrigosa’s death can be witnessed within the Sunwell Plateau raid. During this raid, she faces and is killed by the second boss, the pit lord Brutallus, before we encounter him. Upon Brutallus’s death, his blood raises Madrigosa as the fel dragon Felmyst, the third boss of the raid.
