Class Tuning in Shadowlands Season 3 by Date

March 1st

  • Shaman
    Restoration
The bonus damage from the Raging Vesper Vortex (Kyrian Runecarving Power) has been reduced by 35%.

Warrior

  • Protection
Damage of all abilities increased by 6%.

March 8th

  • Death Knight

    Unholy

    (4) Set Bonus: Your minions deal 10% increased damage (was 5%). When Soul Reaper’s secondary effect triggers, this bonus increases to 50% for 8 seconds (was 25%).

Developers’ note: Unholy’s Tier Set bonus is intended to differentiate the spec from Frost by amplifying one of its niches; strong windows of single-target burst and high-value execute damage. The initial tuning of the bonus was simply too low to make good on that promise, especially when compared to the baseline single-target power other similar bonuses brought to the table.

Druid

  • Balance

    (2) Set Bonus: Entering a Lunar Eclipse now creates a Fury of Elune at 20% effectiveness (was 25%).

  • (4) Set Bonus: While in an Eclipse, the cost of Starsurge and Starfall is reduced by 15% (was 20%).

Developers’ note: The synergy that Balance’s tier set has with some options made this set perform a bit higher than intended. We want to bring Balance in-line with other tier set bonuses while still rewarding those synergistic choices. These changes should keep the power of Balance’s tier set bonus but rein in some of the higher outputs we were seeing.

Feral

  • (2) Set Bonus: Berserk’s cooldown is now reduced by 0.7 seconds per combo point spent (was 0.5 seconds).
  • (4) Set Bonus: Sickle of the Lion’s damage is increased by 25%.

Developers’ note: We really appreciate all of the feedback on the Feral set and feel that we should take some time to explain these changes. When previously tuning this bonus, we took multiple factors into account: the synergy of the set with other legendaries, its synergy with Feral’s kit, the AOE component, and more. Since we last made adjustments during PTR testing, we’ve gotten a chance to incorporate a great deal of the feedback provided and take a fresh look at the numbers and we found that – as players rightly called out – there was a disconnect in how impactful this bonus was in situations such as single-target encounters.
Our goal with these changes is to keep Feral being a strong option in single-target encounters while increasing their AOE throughput. We will continue to actively watch discussions about this, and we want to say again: thank you for the feedback, and we appreciate the community’s patience as we take care with the tuning of this spec.

Hunter

  • Beast Mastery

    (4) Set Bonus: The set bonus now reads as – Kill Command critical hits empower your next Cobra Shot or Multi-Shot, increasing the damage and cooldown reduction of Cobra Shot by 40% or causing Multi-Shot to grant an additional 6 seconds of Beast Cleave.

Developers’ note: We are adding additional functionality to the 4-piece bonus for Beast Mastery Hunters. When your Kill Command critically strikes, it now empowers either your next Cobra Shot with the existing functionality, or causes your next Multi-Shot to cause your next Beast Cleave to last 6 seconds longer. This should allow you to focus more on Barbed Shot, Cobra Shot, and Kill Command in AoE situations and worry less about using a Multi-Shot every 4 seconds to keep the Beast Cleave buff active.

Shaman

  • Elemental

Storm Elemental’s Wind Gust effect gained from casting Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning now has a maximum stack of 10 (was 20). Additionally, if you cast Storm Elemental again while having a Storm Elemental active, the Wind Gust buff will be reset.

Developers’ note: The ability to maintain Storm Elemental at long duration and high uptime allows for extended periods of Lightning Bolts with a cast time of less than 0.6 seconds. Players have reported that this is uncomfortable to play, and we believe it might pose a significant accessibility concern. For that reason, we would rather entirely avoid having a class talent allow cast times which are this short, to avoid similar problems in the future. We are reducing the maximum cast time reduction that can be granted by Storm Elemental. In addition, recasting a Storm Elemental while a Storm Elemental is already active will reset the stacks of Wind Gust.

Warlock

  • Affliction

    (2) Set Bonus: Malefic Rapture’s damage is now increased by 25% (was 15%).

  • (4) Set Bonus: Shadow Bolt now has a 30% chance and Drain Soul now has a 20% chance to make your next Malefic Rapture cost no Soul Shards and cast instantly (was 20% and 10% respectively).

Developers’ note: Affliction’s set bonus wasn’t providing enough of an impactful reward for executing its mechanic. These increases should increase the throughput of Affliction’s tier set and we hope that these changes will bring its output in line with other set bonuses.

Warrior

  • Fury

    (2) Set Bonus: Raging Blow damage reduced to 10% (was 15%).

  • (4) Set Bonus: Duration of Recklessness granted reduced to 3 seconds (was 4 seconds).
  • Glory (Necrolord Runecarving Power): The amount of Rage spent to extend Conqueror’s Banner increased to 25 for Fury Warriors (was 20).

Developers’ note: Fury’s tier set was stronger than intended and we will be reducing the power of both the 2-piece and 4-piece to better fit within our goal for tier bonuses. In addition, we will be increasing the amount of Rage required to extend Conqueror’s Banner duration while the Glory legendary is equipped. The overall uptime of Conqueror’s Banner with the Glory legendary, Set Bonus (and conduits) was much higher than intended. We hope with these changes that the overall feel of all covenant Fury builds remain intact but with much more reasonable output.

March 28th

Druid

  • Guardian

    (4) Set Bonus: Architect’s Aligner now deals reduced damage beyond 5 targets.
Developer note: Architect’s Aligner dealing damage to an uncapped amount of targets was unintended and did not apply the philosophy we introduced earlier in Shadowlands: allowing abilities to hit all targets, but not at full effect. We are implementing a fix in this week’s weekly maintenance to align this bonus with other effects that are similar to it. Additionally, we will be watching its performance and will make additional adjustments if the need arises. Thank you for the feedback regarding this bonus!

Feral

  • All damage increased by 3%.
  • Primal Wrath damage increased by 10%.
  • Brutal Slash damage increased by 20%.
  • Swipe damage increased by 15%.
  • Thrash damage increased by 20%.

Ignore Pain now ignores 55% of the damage (was 50%).

April 4th

  • Druid

    Guardian

    (4) Set Bonus: Architect’s Aligner damage and healing reduced by 35%.

Developers’ note: The performance of Architect’s Aligner has become an outlier amongst other tank tier set bonuses in both single- and multi-target situations. Due to this, with weekly maintenance we will be adjusting Architect’s Aligner to bring its performance closer to other bonuses. Thank you for the feedback and we will continue to watch the ongoing discussions across the community.

Mage

Monk

  • Windwalker

Rising Sun Kick damage increased by 10%.

  • Blackout Kick damage increased by 10%.
  • Tiger Palm damage increased by 10%.
  • Fist of the White Tiger (Talent) damage increased by 10%.

Developers’ note: While Windwalker Monks shine in multitarget situations, we’re seeing their performance fall behind in single target scenarios, even after acquiring endgame gear. As a result, we’re targeting specific abilities with the goal of improving their single target output.

Paladin

Rogue

Warlock

April 18th

Warlock

Developer Note: With this week’s weekly maintenance, we’re reducing the damage of Survival Hunters and Destruction Warlocks against high target counts. In both cases, we were very deliberate in making changes that would not affect either spec below 5 or 8 targets. We were seeing situations where these specs had become dominant due to builds that emerged from 9.2. In the case of Survival Hunters, we still feel that the Wildfire Cluster will serve as an excellent Legendary choice in AoE situations but we are throttling its damage in a manner similar to other AOE abilities. For Destruction, we are focusing on the synergy between Inferno and Rain of Fire that leads to a dramatic increase in damage with target count due to resource generation.

May 31st

  • All classes now generate more threat when in a tank specialization.
  • Developers’ notes: We’ve heard a lot of feedback about threat loss from the community (and our teammates) since the start of this season. Our design intent is that a tank who is actively directing their damage rotation at an enemy should be able to maintain threat on that enemy, but simple area of effect spells (like Consecrate or Death and Decay) alone should not be sufficient. We’ve analyzed this situation and feel that a small adjustment to tank threat modifiers should help maintain that balance for the remainder of the expansion.

Hunter

Developers’ notes: Beast Mastery has not received as much AoE benefit from its set bonus as other specializations and consequently has fallen behind. We’re increasing the damage of their pets and Beast Cleave damage transfer to help their overall performance.
Mage

Developers’ notes: We feel that Arcane single target damage would benefit from an increase, but also want to offer some dispel protection for one of their critical rotational buffs in Clearcasting. This is a change that we will evaluate further going into Dragonflight as generally, we want magical buffs like these to be dispellable. In this case, we feel there is necessary to help this specialization in the short term.
Monk

  • Mistweaver

Reduced cooldown on Zen Focus Tea to 30 seconds (was 45).

Developers’ notes: Mistweavers are having a difficult time responding to burst damage reliably, as they regularly have to open their primary school in order to catch up. Giving them more access to an interrupt protection is intended to let them respond to burst damage more reliably.

Windwalker

  • Rising Sun Kick damage Increased by 20%.
  • Fists of Fury damage to primary target increased by 20%.
  • Blackout Kick damage increased by 20%.
  • Tiger Palm damage increased by 20%.
  • Fist of the White Tiger damage increased by 20%.

Developers’ notes: As part of our ongoing balance efforts, we’re taking a more aggressive approach towards improving Windwalker Monks’ single-target damage, so that their performance is more competitive in raid situations where their unique strengths may not come to the forefront.
Priest

Rogue

Developers’ notes: Our intent with these changes is to improve Outlaw in both single target and 5-6 target cleave situations where Blade Flurry should shine. Outlaw isn’t standing out enough in these moments and we hope these changes move us in the right direction. However, in PvP, Enduring Brawler and Recuperator have given Outlaw more survivability than intended and we’ve decided to reduce the max stack count as a result.
Warrior

Developers’ notes: These changes are intended to increase Arms single target performance while not affecting areas where they already excel.

June 28th

With our next scheduled weekly maintenance (June 28 in this region), we intend to make some tuning adjustments to several classes.
Classes

  • Druid

    Guardian

Mangle and auto attack damage increased by 10%.

Developers’ note: Vengeance Demon Hunter and Guardian Druid have fallen behind in damage, particularly in single target. Our intent with these changes is to improve their performance in single-target without unduly impacting AOE environments.

Demon Hunter

  • Vengeance

All damage and healing abilities increased by 3%.

  • Fracture and Shear damage increased by 20%.
  • Auto attack damage increased by 10%.

Developers’ note: Vengeance Demon Hunter and Guardian Druid have fallen behind in damage, particularly in single target. Our intent with these changes is to improve their performance in single-target without unduly impacting AOE environments.

Warlock

  • Affliction

All ability damage increased by 5%.

Developers’ note: We’re seeing Affliction falling behind a bit in various content and feel a straight increase to their damage is warranted.

Destruction

  • (4) Set Bonus: Blasphemy no longer grants Rain of Chaos.
  • Chaos Bolt damage increased by 5% in PvE combat.
  • Incinerate damage increased by 20%.
  • Immolate damage increased by 20%.
  • Conflagrate damage increased by 10% in PvE combat.

Developers’ note: In order to address Destruction’s excess soul shard generation issues, we’re removing the ability for the Blasphemy to grant Rain of Chaos. This will prevent their shard generation from getting out of control and rein in their AOE output. However, this will have some effect on Destruction’s single-target damage and to help counter the impact we’re increasing the damage of several single-target spells in the Destruction toolkit. This is a big shift so we’ll be monitoring feedback closely and will adjust in the future if needed.
