What Changes Between Burning Crusade and WoW Classic? PvE Meta, No World Buffs, New Races

With Classic Burning Crusade on the horizon, many new features, changes, and overhauls are coming to Classic WoW. In addition to the new level cap, new races, new dungeons, new raids, and new profession, there will be a significant shake-up in the PvE Meta, which we’re going to cover in this article.

Major New Features in The Burning Crusade

When The Burning Crusade launched back in January of 2007, Blizzard changed many things about World of Warcraft “Vanilla” and took the game to new heights with a new direction. Some of the primary focuses Blizzard strived for was faction balance, general quality of life and convenience changes, and moving slightly away from time investment being the primary cost for rewards. You can see this most apparently from the world buff and consumable changes, making raiding less of a gold burden on the general player base. Here are the major changes The Burning Crusade brings to Classic —

New Level Cap

With a new level cap, players can expect to pick up brand new spells from their Class Trainers on their way to level 70. In addition, talent trees for each class are extended, to include new 41-point talents. This is quite a significant change for many classes, as the new Spells and Talents breathe new life into many classes. Below is a list of some standout examples of new Talents and new abilities for classes.

  • Crusader Strike for Retribution Paladins – Crusader Strike is the 41 point talent in the Retribution Talent Tree and is used on cooldown for Retribution Paladins.
  • Vampiric Touch for Shadow Priests – Vampiric Touch is the 41 point talent in the Shadow Talent Tree and is the sole reason Shadow Priests are a must-have in raid compositions.
  • Steady Shot and Kill Command for Hunters – Hunters learn Steady Shot at level 62 and Kill Command at level 66. Both of these abilities kind of re-invent the damage rotation for Hunters, becoming their primary two abilities for all of The Burning Crusade.
  • Bloodlust for Shamans – Shamans learn this ability at level 70, and boy is this one an absolute game changer! Bloodlust is without a doubt one of the most iconic Shaman abilities and an extremely powerful one!

Burning Crusade Classic Class and Talent Overview

New Races for both Factions

Draenei join forces with the Alliance and Blood Elves raise their banner for the Horde. In addition to these new races, both factions will get a new starting zone and follow-up leveling zone. Most importantly, each race will bring the opposite faction’s unique class from Classic WoW to their faction in The Burning Crusade… that means Draenei Shaman for the Alliance and Blood Elf Paladin for the Horde!

This is extremely significant, as it will change the entire raid composition for both factions. Alliance raids will need multiple new Shamans for their composition, while Horde will need new Paladins. Both Shamans and Paladins get significant upgrades in The Burning Crusade and bringing multiple of each will practically be a necessity.

New Dungeons and Raids

There are new Dungeons at Hellfire Citadel in Hellfire Peninsula, Auchindoun in Terrokar Forest, Caverns of Time in Tanaris, Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh, as well as dungeons in Tempest Keep in Netherstorm. In addition to a slew of new zones and Dungeons, multiple raids will be available at launch in The Burning Crusade. Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, Magtheridon’s Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, The Eye, and Hyjal Summit. Later, after The Burning Crusade’s launch, new content will also unlock, with Zul’Aman and the Isle of Quel’Danas, bringing new raids and dungeons as well.

In addition to the new content, a massive feature was also added in The Burning Crusade, Looking for Group. You can’t find the feature page on World of Warcraft’s website anymore, but it has been archived on the Wayback Machine. Back in The Burning Crusade, there was a “Looking for Raid” option there, even though many people might not remember it. Whether Blizzard will implement it the same way for Classic is still a question. If the feature is implemented as it was in The Burning Crusade, you can expect to see many GDKP runs listed here!

New Profession and Profession Updates

Jewelcrafting is a new profession in The Burning Crusade, which allows a jewelcrafter to make new Gems, which are socketed into gear and provide powerful attribute buffs to players. In addition to this new profession, most professions receive a significant facelift in The Burning Crusade. Some examples include Enchanters being able to Enchant their rings, Engineers crafting powerful Goggle helmets, Blacksmiths crafting best in slot weapons, and Leatherworkers crafting Drums, which offer potent buffs for their group!

New PvP System & Arenas

1. Honor System Revamp

  • Current honor totals have been reset.
  • Players may display their highest lifetime rank title (accessible from character sheet).
  • Honor points earned each day may now be spent as a form of currency.
  • Check the PvP tab of your character sheet to see your honor information.
  • PvP rewards are no longer unique.

2. Marks of Honor earned from battlegrounds are no longer turned in for reputation or honor. They are now used in addition to honor points in order to purchase rewards.

3. Two New Arenas are now available in three different modes.

  • 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 matches
  • Players may queue up at Goblin NPC’s in Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Undercity, and Gadgetzan.

While having a mostly minor impact on the PvE content in The Burning Crusade, there were some moments back in the day where Arena seasons launched with new gear before the raid tier launched, meaning for a few weeks, PvP gear was best in slot. Depending on how Blizzard does content releases in The Burning Crusade, this may or may not be a factor. Either way, this is a massive update to the game for many players that focus on PvP content.

Major PvE Meta Shift in The Burning Crusade

With all of the above in mind, we can take a deeper dive into what specific things will be happening in the PvE world of The Burning Crusade and compare how it will be different to Classic WoW, as of right now.

25 Man Raids instead of 40 Man

This is the first and most noticeable difference that Classic WoW raid groups will have to deal with. Splitting up raid groups into 25 Mans will be quite a challenge for many raids and guilds, as there has been a community aspect in Classic, where the same 40 players have been raiding together for over a year. In addition, many raid groups have slowly shifted into a class stacking format, bringing as many Warriors as possible. This won’t be ideal in The Burning Crusade, as most raids will only want a single Warrior Tank or two, and a single Arms Warrior, for the Blood Frenzy Debuff.

For many Warriors that enjoyed their time on the top of the damage meter for all of Classic, they’ve made the choice to re-roll as Hunter or Warlock for The Burning Crusade, as these two classes will become much more coveted for their damage! While class stacking isn’t as severe in The Burning Crusade as it is in Classic WoW, raids will definitely be bringing as many Hunters and Warlocks as they can, usually around 4 to 5 of each.

Alliance and Horde have both Paladin and Shamans

Raid compositions will change drastically as you could have probable guessed, every raid will want multiple Paladins and multiple Shamans. Paladins offer potent raid buffs from Blessing of Kings to Blessing of Salvation, while also offering potent debuffs on the Raid Boss, such as Judgement of Wisdom, which can be refreshed by a Retribution Paladin with Crusader Strike. Shamans bring potent group buffs with totems, as well as Spell Hit and Spell Crit from Totem of Wrath for a caster group! Always a great idea to pair an Elemental Shaman with the Warlock group!

Debuff Limit increased from 16 to 40 Debuffs

This is a gigantic change that really reinvents raiding for most classes and changes the typical damage rotation. Feral Druids can bleed, Shadow Priests can exist, Rogues can use Deadly Poison and bleed, Balance Druids can use Moonfire and Insect Swarm, and there’s a ton of other examples, you get the idea. Basically, every class is pretty much free to put up as many debuffs as they want to maximize their damage output.

Because of the Debuff Limit change and going down to 25 Man Raids instead of 40 Man, most raids will want to bring at least 1 of every specialization from multi-role classes. Shadow Priests, Feral and Balance Druids, Enhancement and Elemental Shamans, Retribution and Protection Paladins, will all find homes in raids, as they are now coveted classes that bring valuable Debuffs to boss encounters.

Ranged are now King Damage Dealers

While this is still a hot topic of debate, many boss mechanics in Tier 4 and Tier 5 encounters are somewhat anti-melee focused. Meaning, Warriors and Rogues will find themselves near the bottom of the damage meters in The Burning Crusade, a very unfamiliar place for these classes coming from Classic WoW. Because melee will have to focus on avoiding mechanics and lose uptime on bosses, ranged classes such as Hunters and Warlocks start to really shine.

Leatherworking for Drums of Battle

Blizzard has announced potential changes to Leatherworking Drums because of how insanely powerful and meta defining Drums of Battle is. If they weren’t changed, most high performing raid groups would require every raid member to have Leatherworking and bring Drums of Battle to raid. As of right now, there seems to be two schools of thought on how Drums of Battle should be changed. Some suggest the buff should be raid wide (meaning only 4 Leatherworkers are needed for an entire raid) or when the drums are used, it gives everyone in the party the Tinnitus debuff, which puts a 2 minute debuff, preventing another drum (meaning only 5 Leatherworkers are needed for an entire raid). No matter what, Leatherworking Drums of Battle are an integral part of The Burning Crusade PvE meta.

Stacking World Buffs won’t be a Problem

  • Fengus’ Ferocity, Mol’dar’s Moxie, Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer, Slip’kik’s Savvy and Spirit of Zandalar these buffs will no longer work on targets over level 63.

This will be one of the most welcome and praised changes going from Classic WoW to Classic Burning Crusade, as the community has been in favor for World Buff changes for quite some time. While the Patch Notes forget to leave out Warchief’s Blessing, the same rule applies to that as the other buffs.

While there is a few World Buffs in The Burning Crusade, Blessing of A’dal and Hellscream’s Warsong, these buffs were later tuned to not apply to the player in raids or dispel from the player when leaving a specific zone. How Blizzard decides to handle these two in Classic Burning Crusade is still a question.

Overhaul to Consumables

  • Elixirs now stack in two categories, Battle (Offensive) and Guardian (Defensive) Elixirs. You can only have one of each type of Elixir up at a time. As a result Elixirs now stack with class abilities such as Arcane Intellect.

Like World Buffs, this is another welcome change for the community. No longer will players need to spend hundreds and hundreds of gold on dozens of consumables that stack with one another. In general, most classes raid consumables will be heavily simplified down to the most essential: flask, food, and potion. In addition to the essentials, classes also bring Temporary Weapon Enchants, such as Weapon Oils. Along with this, some classes bring other items that share cooldown with Healthstone, such as Thistle Tea, Flame Cap, or Nightmare Seed.

Downranking Low Level Spells nerfed

  • Low-level spells cast by high-level players will receive smaller bonuses from +healing and +spell damage.

While this change mostly impacts Healers, it is definitely worth mentioning. In The Burning Crusade, a new formula is added for spell coefficients, which reduces the coefficient of lower level spells even further.

Significant Stat and Attribute Changes

  • Items that give bonuses, such as critical strike percentage, have been modified to adhere to a combat rating system.
  • All current items will provide the exact same benefit from ratings at level 60 as they provided before the ratings system.

While this change doesn’t impact raid groups or players directly, it does change how gear is valued by classes and how most players will gear their characters. Instead of gear giving direct 1% or 2% bonuses to Hit or Critical Strike Chance, they’ll now be giving direct Rating Values, such as Hit Rating, Dodge Rating, or Critical Strike Rating. This is quite a change from Classic WoW.
