Hearthstone vs WoW Lore
While Hearthstone lore is based on World of Warcraft, Hearthstone itself is more of an alternative universe, with unique lore completely different from the World of Warcraft canon. However, Hearthstone characters also often make it into official World of Warcraft lore, a most recent example is the introduction of Bartender Bob in Patch 10.1.5.
In World of Warcraft lore, Titans are a race of colossal cosmic beings of Order, birthed from the World Souls of planets. The Titan Pantheon is currently made up of six titans: Aman’Thul, Eonar, Norgannon, Golganneth, Khaz’goroth, and Aggramar. A seventh Titan, Sargeras, deflected from the Pantheon to create the Burning Legion. He has been imprisoned since the events of Legion. Azeroth contains the world soul of a Titan, and the only other Titans we know of are deceased.
In the new Hearthstone expansion, however, there will be a total of eleven Titans – one for every class! In other words, the Titan featured in the promotional artwork is just one of several new Titans that will be introduced in Hearthstone!
New Titans
In a recent group interview with Hearthstone VFX artist Luke Mason and lead designer Cora Georgiou, it was revealed that the name of the featured new Titan is Amitus.
“She’s pretty cool. She’s a peacekeeping Titan,” Georgiou said, “and she fits a bit of a niche that I thought the Titans didn’t have in the order.” Considering most of the other Titans are male characters with long beards, Amitus’ design also brings some much-appreciated diversity to the Pantheon. According to Georgiou, she also may not be the only original character in the expansion.
The two also spoke about matching each class to a Titan, as well as the motivation for adding so many Titans to Hearthstone’s lore: Fun!
Iconic Titans like Eonar, Khaz’goroth, Golganneth, and Norgannon fit easily as the Titans for the Druid, Warrior, Shaman, and Mage respectively, but some classes weren’t as straightforward. “A lot of these Titans didn’t come with class identities off the bat,” Mason said, “so it was really up to the teams to figure out the most effective matchings.”
Georgiou gave an example with the unrevealed Demon Hunter Titan. “I think that we came up with a way to represent Demon Hunter through a not-so-traditionally Demon Hunter character, but in a way that felt like it was a marriage of the two.” It is clear Georgiou is excited for players to see what Titans appear in the set as Hearthstone reveals it in the month leading up to its release.
“Obviously we have the canon Titans, but we have a couple that are surprises. I’m curious to see if anyone will guess who the Death Knight Titan is. I think if you think about it, it makes sense, but it’s not so obvious.”
Amitus in World of Warcraft?
For now, it’s impossible to predict if Amitus will ever make an appearance in World of Warcraft. However, Dragonflight has been littered with hints that we still have plenty to learn about the Titans.
From early revelations about the questionable methods the Titans used to influence the Dragonflights, to uncomfortable quests on the PTR that can’t help but make us question the Titans’ idea of a “true timeline”, we can’t help but think that some sort of confrontation with the Titans could be in our future – and that might be a perfect time to introduce a few new faces.
Of course, as with other Hearthstone characters who have made it into WoW, the lore around it would have to make sense – And making the lore fit entire planet-sized beings could be a bit tricky. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
